Local 8 New Brunswick Remembers Gold Card Member
July - August 2005
Fifty-year New Brunswick member and officer J. Harold Stafford, a fearless organizer, astute labour historian, and retired regional director of education for the Canadian Labour Congress, died this spring in Saint John, NB. He was 88. Brother Stafford was known throughout the Atlantic Provinces for his seemingly endless knowledge of, and dedication to, the trade union movement.
Stafford joined former Local 1 NB, now Local 8, and went on to serve in several leadership roles. He also held office in Saint John’s Building and Construction Trades Council, and the District Labour Council.
The incredibly long list of Brother Stafford’s civic commitments, including his service on dozens of hospital, library, and health care-related commissions led the City of Saint John to confer on him the Freedom of the City in 1989.
IU Canadian Congress Co-Chair and recently appointed BAC region 10 Director Fred Vautour said of Stafford, “He was one in a million. It’s almost beyond belief that one person accomplished all that he did. It would take most of us 10 lifetimes to be as productive.”
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Lillian T. (Honey) Stafford.
