Local 1 Saskatchewan Honors Architectural Firm
Issue 2 - 2009
In 2006, Local 1 Saskatchewan celebrated 100 years as a chartered Local of the International Union. In early 2007, the Local hosted a special awards event that recognized members, contractors, architects, engineers and builders of projects with significant masonry elements for their respective contributions to the Local’s longevity and progress.

As a way to continue outreach to industry partners, and in accordance with the Local’s Operating Plan, in May 2008, Local 1 SK President and Canadian Congress Co-Chair Clarence Medernach presented a special award to P3Architecture, a Regina-based firm involved in the design of many federal, provincial, and institutional buildings. Some of the firm’s most notable work with significant masonry elements includes the University of Regina Laboratory Addition, the new Provincial Correctional Centre in Regina, and the Saskatchewan Disease Central Laboratory.
The last two projects are LEED-certified buildings, including Canada’s first ever—the Regina Correction Centre. All three projects reflect P3A’s early emphasis on sustainability, and its strong commitment to delivering projects on time and on budget. (For additional details on these and other projects, please visit the firm’s website at www.p3arch.com.)
But the exchange of ideas and dialogue didn’t end there. To help ensure that top firms like P3A have the opportunity to learn about the latest developments in masonry products, and feel comfortable specifying them, P3A was invited to attend the BAC/IMI New Products Expo at the Flynn Center in September. Judging from the response of P3A principal, James J. Youck, who described the Expo as an “eye-opening and educational experience” whose “effectiveness…should not be underestimated,” Local 1’s efforts to build working relationships with new industry partners are definitely yielding positive results. |
