Local 8 New Brunswick Promotes Masonry Careers

For the members, officers, and instructors of Local 8 New Brunswick, it was all hands on deck for the Explore My Future career awareness expo held in Fredericton last year. In conjunction with the Masonry Industry Association of Atlantic Canada (MIAAC), the Local 8 team led by President Gerald Reinders organized and staffed the BAC/IMI exhibit, which, through hands-on demonstrations and one-on-one conversations with visiting students and teachers, helped both groups gain a better understanding of the training opportunities and career options available in the trowel trades.

The two-day event drew more faculty members and students than expected. It also attracted provincial and local officials and special guest Mike Holmes, host of the popular home renovation show, “Holmes on Homes,” who even tried his hand at laying a brick or two at the BAC/IMI booth.

President Gerald Reinders said Local 8 NB works hard to take advantage of every opportunity to “reach out to key target groups such as students and teachers to tell them about our training programs and to emphasize the range of career paths that are available in our trades.” In addition to the Explore My Future expo, Reinders noted the Local’s participation in another successful trade fair at the New Brunswick Community College in Saint John.
