The active career of one of the International Union’s hardest working, most productive officers drew to a close on April 1st with the retirement of IU Executive Vice President Gerald O’Malley.
O’Malley, a bricklayer by trade and 43-year member and former officer of Local 1 Michigan, was appointed to the Executive Board in February 2000 and unanimously returned to office at IU Conventions in 2000 and 2005. IU North Central Regional Director Henry Kramer was named by IU President John J. Flynn to fill O’Malley’s unexpired term [see related story on page 8].
At a “Salute to Jerry O’Malley” on April 15th, the Executive Board was joined by many BAC Local officers with whom O’Malley had worked closely over the years, to recognize his long list of contributions to the International and the Union. In his remarks, President Flynn cited O’Malley’s most notable accomplishments, giving special emphasis to “his unwavering commitment to ensure safer working conditions for BAC members.” O’Malley’s leadership as Chair of the BCTD’s Silica Subcommittee brought representatives together in support of a silica standard and forced the Bush Administration-dominated OSHA to keep silica on the regulatory agenda. Flynn also praised the retiring Executive Board member’s oversight of the IU’s Trade Jurisdiction Department, administration of the IU’s national agreements, and central role in the area of apprenticeship and training – especially the successful reintroduction of the International Apprentice Contest and completion of the BAC/IMI John J. Flynn International Training Center.

Before presenting O’Malley with a commemorative plaque, Flynn said, “It is an honor and a privilege to salute Brother Jerry O’Malley’s distinguished service to our members, our Union, and the masonry industry. He has accomplished more in eight years than many achieve in a lifetime.”
O’Malley said he plans to enjoy every minute of retirement, and looks forward to spending more “quality” time with his wife Sandy, and their children and grandchildren.
