BAC Mourns the Passing of Edward Smith, Chairman and CEO of Ullico
The International Union of Bricklayer and Allied Craftworkers (BAC) mourns the passing of Edward Smith, Chairman and CEO of Ullico, the Union Labor Life Insurance Company. Brother Smith passed away with his family at his side on January 3, 2024.
Brother Smith was appointed President of Ullico in 2008, but his participation in the labor movement dated back to 1968, when he joined the Laborers’ International Union of North America (LIUNA) at age thirteen and served as Local 773 business manager and an International Vice President. His steadfast leadership, extensive knowledge of the unionized construction industry, and deep network of relationships helped Ullico enhance its insurance program, grow its union-supporting commercial real estate financing fund, and generously give back to the community.
“Ed was a committed trade unionist with a genuine passion for improving the lives of working Americans and their unions,” said BAC President Timothy Driscoll. “His leadership was marked by an unparalleled determination and innovation in advancing the cause of labor. The labor movement has lost a true champion.”
Brother Smith will be truly missed by BAC members and the labor community. BAC brothers and sisters who knew him will forever remember his commitment to using labor’s capital for the good of every worker.
