BAC Disaster Relief Fund Assists Local 1 Hawaii Members After March Flooding

2026 Issue 2
BAC Disaster Relief Program

Hundreds of people were rescued and thousands evacuated after a series of storms pounded Hawaii in March, causing severe flooding and at least hundreds of millions of dollars in damage. The intense rainfall saturated ground on parts of the islands and caused additional rain to flood streets. It was the worst flooding the state has experienced in over 20 years.

The BAC Disaster Relief Fund, a program founded over 10 years ago to help BAC members and their families get back on their feet after disaster strikes, assisted two Local 1 Hawaii members whose homes were damaged by the flooding. Douglas "Kaina" Simmons, a 36-year member of Local 1 Hawaii, shared, “It helped me to buy the materials I needed to repair my kitchen and I didn’t have to wait to save money to have it repaired. I’m very appreciative of Local 1 Hawaii and the International Union for the quick response."
