BAC Extends Executive Board for New 5-year Term

"The confidence that you have placed in me and my fellow Board members to lead our great union needs to be earned every day. You have my pledge that I’ll do my utmost to continue to earn that trust." — BAC President Tim Driscoll

Culminating Day 1 of its first virtual convention, delegates of the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers (BAC) unanimously voted to extend the Executive Board to a new five-year term. The Board includes Tim Driscoll, President; Bob Arnold, Secretary-Treasurer; and Executive Vice Presidents Carlos Aquin and Jerry Sullivan, Jr.

Driscoll succeeded former President James Boland, who retired in December 2019. Driscoll had served as Secretary-Treasurer since 2017 and an International Union Executive Vice President from 2010 to 2017. A second-generation bricklayer, Driscoll joined BAC Local 3 Massachusetts in 1985, where he served his apprenticeship and worked as a journeyman bricklayer on numerous commercial and institutional projects before ascending through the working ranks of the industry.

"I need to start by saying that I am humbled and honored, and that I don’t take the support of the delegates gathered here for granted," said Driscoll, who also is co-chair of the International Masonry Institute (IMI), International Trowel Trades Pension Fund and the International Health Fund. "The confidence that you have placed in me and my fellow Board members to lead our great union needs to be earned every day. You have my pledge that I’ll do my utmost to continue to earn that trust."

In his acceptance speech, Driscoll relayed a story about a young apprentice who asked him about the path to leading the Union. "I had to pause for a moment and admit honestly that there wasn’t a designed path, other than you apply yourself to the best of your ability, take hold of the opportunities that present themselves, and you give your best effort in whatever capacity you are working in."

The 2020 BAC Convention will continue tomorrow, September 29th, from noon-5 p.m. Included in the Day 2 speeches are presentations from Canadian dignitaries Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Sean Strickland, Executive Director of the Canadian Building Trades Unions, as well as political election icon and co-host of the "2020 Politics War Room" podcast James Carville, and Ken Simonson, Chief Economist of the Associated General Contractors of America.
