BAC Calls for The Immediate Return of Union Brother Abrego Garcia
[Washington, DC] The International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers President Timothy Driscoll released the following statement today after learning the White House deported union apprentice and legal U.S. resident Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia:
BAC joins the American labor movement, especially our brothers and sisters in the Sheet Metal, Air, Transportation, and Rail Workers (SMART), in condemning the lawless seizure and deportation of SMART Local 100 apprentice Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia.
His union, SMART, has shared that Brother Garcia was legally authorized to live and work in this country and was complying with all his responsibilities under the law. Like so many immigrants before him he was lawfully engaged in the construction trades through his union and seeking to build a better life for himself and his family through his union’s apprenticeship program.
While the Trump Administration has acknowledged that he was wrongfully arrested, deported, and imprisoned in El Salvador they now refuse to take any steps to correct this injustice. This shameful conduct by our government is unacceptable. BAC stands with SMART and the rest of the American labor movement in demanding that the Trump Administration take all actions necessary to reunite Brother Garcia with his wife and young family.
